Jannik Sinner is ready to play at the Canadian Open after recovering from his recent illness. The defending champion will be back in action, but several top ATP stars might miss the event in Montreal.
World No. 1 Sinner hasn't played since losing in the Wimbledon quarter-final. He first withdrew from the Swedish Open due to fatigue, then pulled out of Italy’s Olympic squad on doctors' advice due to tonsillitis.
“I am saddened to inform you that unfortunately, I will not be able to participate in the Paris Olympic Games,” he wrote. “After a good week of clay training, I started to feel unwell. The doctor found tonsillitis and strongly advised me against playing. Missing the Games is a huge disappointment as it was one of my main goals for this season.”
Now feeling better, Sinner has arrived in Montreal and started practicing for the ATP Masters 1000 event.
“Good to start hitting again and looking forward to building from here,” he posted.
Sinner, who beat Alex de Minaur in last year’s final, will be the top seed for his title defense. However, other top players might not participate due to the Paris Olympics.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has already withdrawn as he is still playing at Roland Garros. Other big names like Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Tommy Paul might also miss the event if they reach the medal matches in Paris.
The Paris Games are on clay, while the Canadian Open is on outdoor hard courts. This gives players little time to practice on the new surface before the event starts on August 6. The top eight seeds, including Sinner, Alcaraz, Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, de Minaur, Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, and Grigor Dimitrov, will have a bye into the second round.
